The Great Pie Debate:
Who Has the Best in Springdale?
The holidays are filled with goodies and sweet and more pie and cake
than most of us probably eat the rest of the year. This recently
prompted the question "who has the best pie in Springdale". Pie
usually goes hand in hand with places that serve plate lunches and
house rousing breakfast and lunch conversations about all things
happening in and around town.
Obvious places come to mind. Is it the iconic pink building heading
North on 71B? Neal's Café' has been serving up delicious homemade
food for seven decades. Every day except Monday, when they're
closed, you can find a table of coffee drinkers in the morning and
around town experts for about 2 hours at lunch keeping you up on the
latest news. You'll also find fan favorites like coconut cream pie,
chocolate pie, apple pie and lemon pie. Hard to go wrong no matter
what you choose in my humble opinion.
Back to the West you find the unassuming Susan's sitting across the
street from the new Dairy Queen and only open for breakfast and
lunch. When you stay as busy as Susan's you don't have to be there
until the late hours of the night. Much like their friends to the North they
have their group of breakfast and lunch regulars. Depending on who
you ask you may try the upside-down apple pie, strawberry icebox, or
an of the meringue pies that include lemon, coconut or chocolate. Any
of these will send you on your way with a pleasant remembrance of
Susan's.
If you head Downtown jut before you reach city hall you will find the
Spring Street Grill. A staple of Downtown Springdale for over 3
decades, Spring Street is also one of those places you better visit at
breakfast or lunch lest you find they're not around for dinner. There has
been a long running debate among many in town about who has better
pies and as many as any other joint will tell you they are found here.
The back of the restaurant will be filled almost any day with Pecan Pie,
Apple Pie, Cherry Pie or the always popular Coconut Cream Pies. This
stop is one you won't regret and definitely one you will want to return to
in the future.
I hope we've given you something to consider and a desire to get out
and try some of the places if you've never had a chance to eat their
delicious desserts. You'll find they've all been doing it for decades and
have their own special ways of preparing them, but much like anything
else you'll find favorites you prefer. Enjoy time with your family and
friends this holiday season and have some pie before we all get to
those dreaded New Year's resolutions!
