Springdale is a town compromised of many different people. Folks
from hundreds of nations, many colors and different creeds. One thing
the great majority have in common is a deep seeded pride in the
community. Never has that been more evident than in the face of the
worst pandemic of this generation. While many towns around the
country are facing major financial shortfalls, Springdale has risen above
the fray.
Sales tax reports for the month of March were recently released and
Springdale showed a 7.3% increase in a month where the state was
effectively shut down on March 14th. During that same time frame the
city of Fayetteville had flat growth numbers only up .24% and the city of
Rogers was down 6.3%. Springdale is up 8.13% for the year which
represents an increase of over $500,000 through the month of March.
As we move forward into April we may see a harder hit economy,
however, it should be noted that here at Live Springdale, over at the
Springdale Chamber of Commerce and at the Downtown Springdale
Alliance there has been a major effort to shop here at home, buy your
groceries in Springdale and get take out whenever you can to support
our Springdale restaurants. In addition, there have been multiple efforts
by individuals to purchase gift cards, buy group meals for offices and
companies and help our local businesses in any way possible.
Lastly, it should also be noted that Springdale represents the 2nd
largest city in Northwest Arkansas and has the lowest median income.
Therefore, simple math would indicate that residents of the city of
Springdale as a whole received more of the money from the CARES
Act than any other city. Should people continue to spend at home I
predict we will not see as much of a decline as some are predicting in
April's numbers. Only time will tell. Here's hoping we continue to
overcome the adversity.
